The Olympiads are like the sports Olympics. But unlike the sports Olympics, they are for academics, limited to pre-university students and held, not every 4 years, but every year. These Olympiads are hosted in different international locations.
The Olympiads are not merely competitions. They are a celebration of the very best in Pre-University Science and Mathematics. The unconventional Olympiad problems bring you closer to life and to frontier level research. These questions are interdisciplinary in nature i.e., cover concepts across diverse areas of the subject and have to be understood and integrated in order to suggest a credible solution to the problem. The Olympiads probe ability and creativity and not speed.
Although the international Olympiads are more than 50 years old, India started participating in them about 2 decades ago. During this period, we hosted International Olympiads for Mathematics in 1996, Chemistry in 2001, Astronomy in 2006, Biology in 2008, International Junior Science Olympiad in Pune in 2013 and International Physics Olympiad in July 2015 in Mumbai.

Given the competitive nature of these Olympiads you should start preparations early and focus on building a solid foundation in all core subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology). So, start early with primary and middle school Olympiads.

In the present times when the world is totally pivoted on science and IT, it is pertinent to think and plan about the future – a future in which the children of the present shall be the leaders of tomorrow. Regular qualitative and quantitative assessment needs to be done at the national/international level in order to build up the scientific, commercial and IT talent pool.
It is in this sphere that the role of Olympiads has been much appreciated over these last many years, so much so that The Ministry of Corporate Affairs, through The Institute of Company Secretaries of India, and many highly reputed organizations like Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Infosys, etc. have volunteered for supporting such programs.
There are various national level Olympiads conducted in India of these SOF, SilverZone are most prominent. Apart for laying strong foundations for competitions like CUET, NEET and JEE they also enrich your portfolio. These are generally conducted in 2 levels.
Their relevance increases as they provide foundation and prepare you for your international competitions. In India these are conducted and proctored by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE). All of these are conducted in 5-6 stages spread across the period of almost a year.

Most students have little or no Olympiad-level experience or instruction before they take a national Olympiad or any school level competitions.
