The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO)
The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) is one of the most-anticipated competitions for young students passionate about science. It aspires to unite some of the brightest young scientists worldwide to compete, exchange knowledge and skills, and have a passion for science.
The competition aims to encourage young students to pursue careers in science and technology, recognize talented students in the science field, and promote science education as well as scientific awareness among young students. The Olympiad also fosters international cooperation and understanding among students. The competition is open to students nominated by their respective national science organizations and is 15 years old or younger as of the competition year.
This competition is a chance for students to show their academic talents, learn from their classmates, and get invaluable experience that will aid them in their future academic and professional endeavors. By participating in IJSO, students can develop a passion for science and explore the subject further while showcasing their knowledge and skills on an international platform.
The IJSO curriculum will encompass Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. It will assess students’ knowledge and comprehension of fundamental ideas in these subjects as well as their capacity to use these ideas to solve problems.
IJSO Syllabus
The IJSO syllabus for 2023 covers three main subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The curriculum is intended to assess students’ knowledge and understanding of essential principles in various domains and their ability to use these concepts to solve problems.
IJSO Important Dates
The Schedule for IJSO is given below –
| Event | Date |
| Registration Date for NSEJS | 3rd week of February to 3rd week of April |
| Registration Date for INJSO | 1st week of July |
| Registration Closed | Last week of September |
| IJSO Exam | 01 December to 10 December |
IJSO Eligibility of Science Olympiad
To participate in IJSO, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- They must be under the age of 15 years as of December 31st.
- They must not have completed their schooling before December 31st.
- They must have qualified through their respective National Olympiad programs.
- They must have obtained their school’s permission to participate in the Olympiad.
IJSO Exam Pattern
This information is based on last year’s pattern.
- The IJSO competition has three types of tests: MCQs, theory and practical, given on three separate days.
- The exams are usually 3-4 hours long and are conducted in English, with translations available in each country’s native language.
- The MCQ test has 30 questions, with 10 questions each from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
- One mark is awarded for each correct answer, while each wrong answer carries a penalty of 0.25 marks.
- Unanswered questions are awarded 0 marks.
IJSO Stages
These are conducted in 5 stages spread across the period of almost a year.
International Junior Science Olympiad Stages

NSEJS → INJSO → Orientation Cum Selection Camp → Pre-Departure Camp →
International Junior Science Olympiad (conducted in the hosting country)
Stage I: National Standard Examination in Junior Science (NSEJS):
It is the organized by Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT). NSEJS exam is based on objective type questions and are offered in English and Hindi. The syllabus is broadly equivalent to up to Class X of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). It has Age limit which is changed every year, students of class 8th, 9th, and a few of class 10th in age limit can appear for this examination.
NSEJS Program
As we know IJSO is Olympic of Olympiads, so we train and prepare students to be the best in all subjects. We prepare them for all subjects viz. Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Stage II: Indian National Junior Science Olympiad (INJSO)
The best-performing students from the NSEJS (approximately 300 Nationwide) qualify for the second stage – the Indian National Jr. Science Olympiad (INJSO), conducted by HBCSE. The INJSO is held in late January at around 18 centers across the country. The syllabus is same as that of the NSEJS. The tests consist of objective as well as long questions.
INJSO Program
Only students who are qualified in NSEJS are eligible for this program, we provide them an intense training and practice in all subjects to maximum level. We prepare them for all subjects viz. Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Stage III: Orientation cum Selection Camp (OCSC) in junior science
The top 35 students from the INJSO are selected for Orientation-cum-Selection Camp held at HBCSE. At these camps orientation is provided to students for Olympiad level of theoretical and experimental tasks. Emphasis is laid on developing conceptual foundations and problem-solving skills. Students are exposed to innovative experiments with focus on conceptual and procedural understanding in experimental science.
Stage IV: Pre-departure Training Camp (PDT) for IJSO.
The selected Indian teams undergo a rigorous training programme at HBCSE in theory and experiment and in case of Science prior to their departure for the International Olympiad. Special laboratories have been developed in HBCSE for this purpose. Resource persons from different institutions across the country are invited to the training camps.
Stage V: Participation in International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO).
Participation in International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO).
The Olympiad program culminates with the participation of the 6 Indian students in this Olympiad. The students are accompanied by 2-4 teachers or mentors.
The 6 special merit awardees in Junior Science selected at the end of the OCSC constitute the 6-member student team for the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) which represents INDIA at the International Level. Top students from 40-45 countries (approximately) take part in the final level.
Conclusion
The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) is a big competition for kids who love science. The goal is to find the best young scientists worldwide and give them a chance to show what they know. To participate, kids must be 15 years old or younger and picked by their country’s science group. The topics are physics, chemistry, and biology. The goal of the IJSO is to inspire kids to love science and to learn more about it.
